As a parent or caregiver of a child with diabetes, your back-to-school checklist includes more than a backpack, notebooks and writing tools.

June 17, 2017 was easily the most heart wrenching and difficult day of my entire life. It was the day I lost my mother to cancer. She was by my side when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes nearly five years ago, and held my hand through the first few weeks of learning to live with T1D.

As many people know, I am very active with the Friends for Life (FFL) conference organized by the organization Children with Diabetes (CWD), which takes place each July in Orlando.  I have been involved since the beginning of FFL and it has been nothing less than an absolute honor and joy.

My son Colton is a two-year-old toddler with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Every morning we wake up planning another successful day in the logs. Yes, you read that correctly. I said logs, as in, blood sugar logs.
