What Is Juvenile Diabetes?

Juvenile diabetes is an outdated term for type 1 diabetes. People at any age, from infants to adults can be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.1Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body selectively attacks the beta cells of the pancreas which are required to produce the hormone insulin.  Without adequate insulin, our bodies can’t properly use sugar or glucose as energy and instead turn to fat and muscle stores. Lack of insulin may lead to a dangerous build-up of sugar in the blood stream.

If type 1 diabetes is not correctly diagnosed or if insulin is not adequately supplied, blood glucose levels will continue to rise and increase the risk of developing serious medical complications including heart, eye and kidney disease as well as a weakened immune system. Inadequate insulin and the subsequent build-up of glucose and acids in the system, can trigger diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which could be life threatening.

The health care team must collaborate with and support children and adults living with type 1 diabetes (along with their families and caregivers) to help manage blood glucose levels. While there are numerous factors involved in blood glucose management, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) as well as good nutrition, regular physical activity, and properly dosed insulin 3 help people living with type 1 diabetes better manage their blood glucose levels.4
