Filling and Applying the Pod
Wistia Source URL

During this video, we will walk through the steps to: one, fill the pod using a Fill Syringe to the "Fill Here" line.

Two, apply the pod to the site you have chosen before the cannula deploys. And three, check the pod infusion site to make sure the cannula has inserted properly and the pod is flashing a green light.

Watch this video completely prior to trying to fill your first pod.

Trying to watch and fill the pod at the same time can be difficult and distracting.

By watching the video first, you can get familiar with the steps of filling and applying the pod.

Then when you are ready, replay the video to follow along as you complete the steps.

This will help you not feel rushed or doing something incorrectly.

Prior to filling the pod, you should use an alcohol swab to clean the site you have chosen for your pod. If you have not cleaned your site, do so now.

Now that you have cleaned your pod site, turn the pod so you can see the bottom.

Locate the fill port by following the black arrow on the underside of the pod.

While keeping the pod in its tray, use your other hand to hold the pod steady. Then insert the needle straight down into the center of the fill port.

You must insert the needle straight down, not at an angle, to ensure that you don't bend or break the needle.

The needle should insert easily into the center of the fill port.

Do not try to force the insulin into the pod.

Slowly press down on the syringe plunger, down completely to fill the pod.

Listen for two confirmation beeps that tell you when the process has started. (pod beeping)

Be sure to completely empty the fill syringe into the pod even after hearing the two beeps.

Once you have filled the pod completely and heard the beeps, pull straight up on the syringe to remove it from the fill port.

You will not need the syringe again.

Recap the needle and discard in an appropriate sharps receptacle.

After filling the pod with insulin and hearing the double confirmation beeps, (pod beeping) turn the pod over so you can see the top of the pod. The pod begins to do an internal safety check, this will take about one minute, and there will be no lights or sounds during this process.

Once complete, your pod will begin another sequence of beeps and you will see an amber light begin to flash. (pod beeping longer)

This means that you have three minutes to apply the pod before the thin tube is automatically inserted through your skin into your body.

Do not begin the following steps if you do not see the amber light or did not hear the beeps, so that you are only applying a working pod.

Once you see the amber blinking light, securely hold the pod and pry or snap off the hard plastic tab by lifting it with your index finger, like when you open a beverage can.

Don't be afraid to apply pressure to remove the hard plastic tab from the pod as this is normal.

Turn the pod over so you can confirm the cannula is not sticking out of the pod already.

Grasp the pod on the sides with only your fingertips.

Using the two small tabs on the side of the adhesive backing, gently pull the first tab away from the middle of the pod, then pull the other tab in the opposite direction.

Ensure that the adhesive tape is clean and intact.

Do not use a pod if you have dropped it or the tape has folded over.

Continue to grasp the pod on the sides with only your fingertips, keeping your fingers away from the adhesive tape.

Turn the pod so it is horizontal or diagonal on your abdomen, lower back, or buttocks, and vertical on your upper back of your arm or the side of the front of your thigh.

Confirm again that the thin tube or cannula is not extending from the pod.

If it is, discard the pod and start with a new pod.

If it is not extending from the pod, continue to apply the pod to the site you cleaned with the alcohol swab. Place the pod flat with no folds in the adhesive.

Once the pod is on your skin, press firmly on the pod, then run your finger around the side of the adhesive to secure it.

If the pod was applied to a lean area, gently pinch the skin around the pod.

Make sure not to pull the pod off your body.

The pod will sound a series of beeps, letting you know that the pod will insert the cannula into your body in 30 seconds or less. (pod beeping in a series)

If you do not apply the pod before the green light, the cannula may have already deployed, and you will no longer be able to insert it into your body.

Before the thin tube or cannula is inserted, you may hear a click sound, which is completely normal. (pod clicking)

After insertion of the thin tube, you will hear a double beep to confirm it has been inserted. (pod beeping)

As soon as it's been inserted, the needle retracts back into the pod so that only the thin tube cannula remains for insulin delivery.

The needle does not remain in your skin.

You may have felt the insertion, but check the pod to confirm the thin tube was inserted properly using the viewing window.

Look through the viewing window to verify that it is inserted into the skin.

Verify that the pink color is in the area indicated on the top of the pod.

You can use a mirror to help you identify the thin tube and the pink slide insert.

After confirming it has been inserted, you should continue to look at the pod throughout the time you are wearing it to confirm the green light is still blinking.
