Coverage for Omnipod in Saskatchewan
Public funding status
Saskatchewan provides public funding for insulin pump therapy through the Saskatchewan Aids to Independent Living (SAIL) Insulin Pump Program. The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System are covered under the SAIL Insulin Pump Program, while supplies (Pods) are covered under Saskatchewan Drug Plan, subject to deductible or co-payments.
Who may be eligible
You may be eligible for public insulin pump coverage in Saskatchewan if you:
- Are a Saskatchewan resident with provincial health coverage
- Have type 1 diabetes
- Have demonstrated consistent diabetes self-management for at least six months
- Are assessed and followed by a Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) diabetes education program
- Are recommended for insulin pump therapy by an authorized specialist physician
- Complete a supervised insulin pump trial (up to three months), where required
Children and youth must also demonstrate parent or guardian involvement through a pediatric diabetes education program.
Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for insulin pump coverage under the SAIL Insulin Pump Program.
What the program covers
If approved, the SAIL Insulin Pump Program generally covers:
- One insulin pump every five years (or Starter Kit for Omnipod), supported through a provincial grant
- Supplier-provided pump supplies during the trial period, at no cost
- Access to insulin pump supplies, with coverage provided through Saskatchewan Drug Plan programs, subject to deductibles or co-payments
What coverage may look like (example)
With provincial coverage in Saskatchewan, eligible patients can expect the insulin pump to be funded up to a maximum limit, while pump supplies may be fully or partially covered through provincial drug benefit programs, depending on individual eligibility and deductibles.
How access typically works
1. You discuss insulin pump therapy with your diabetes care team
2. Be assessed through an SHA diabetes education program, including review of self-management practices
3. You complete a pump information session or education modules, if required
4. Begin a supervised insulin pump trial (up to three months)
5. If the trial is successful, your diabetes care team submits the SAIL application on your behalf
6. Once approved, you are registered in the program and can continue pump therapy with funded support
How long the process may take
Timelines vary depending on completion of education, trial period, and application review. Coverage begins once eligibility is confirmed and registration with the SAIL Insulin Pump Program is complete.
If additional support is needed
Pump supplies are covered through Saskatchewan Drug Plan programs and may involve deductibles or co-payments. If your coverage status changes, eligibility may be reassessed through your diabetes care team or the SAIL program. You may also wish to review private insurance options to help with remaining costs.
