Coverage for Omnipod in Québec
Public funding status
Québec provides public funding for insulin pumps and pump supplies through the Insulin Pump Access Program. The program is designed primarily for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System is covered under the Insulin Pump Access Program.
Who may be eligible
You may be eligible for insulin pump coverage in Québec if you:
- Are under 18 years of age
- Are covered by Québec’s public health insurance plan (RAMQ)
- Have type 1 diabetes
- Meet the program’s clinical eligibility criteria, as determined by a designated institution
- Commit to required education, training, and ongoing follow-up with a diabetes care team
Individuals admitted to the program before age 18 may continue to receive coverage after turning 18, provided they continue to meet the clinical eligibility criteria through annual reassessments.
Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for insulin pump coverage under this program.
What the program covers
If approved, the Québec Insulin Pump Access Program generally covers:
- Reimbursement for the purchase of one insulin pump (or Starter Kit for Omnipod), up to a maximum amount, with replacement typically every five years
- Annual reimbursement for insulin pump supplies, up to a yearly maximum of $4,000
- Coverage applies only to pumps and supplies obtained through approved manufacturers or distributors
Reimbursement is coordinated through the CHU de Québec – Université Laval, which acts as the program’s paying agent.
What coverage may look like (example)
With provincial support in Québec, eligible families can expect to purchase an insulin pump and supplies upfront and receive reimbursement up to the program’s maximum amounts. CHU de Québec – Université Laval offers direct billing for supplies, reducing the need for out-of-pocket payment.
How access typically works
1. You discuss insulin pump therapy with your child’s paediatrician, endocrinologist, or family doctor
2. If pump therapy is appropriate, your child is referred to a designated institution for eligibility assessment
3. If eligibility criteria are met, an authorized physician completes an eligibility certificate
4. The eligibility form is sent to the CHU de Québec – Université Laval to open a program file
5. You attend required education and training sessions with your child before selecting a pump
6. The insulin pump is purchased through the vendor or distributor, and reimbursement is processed according to program rules
How long the process may take
Timelines vary depending on referral to a designated institution, completion of training, and processing of eligibility documentation. Eligibility must be reviewed annually to maintain coverage.
If additional support is needed
The program reimburses costs up to set maximums. Families may wish to review private insurance options, if available, to help cover any remaining costs beyond the program limits.
