Coverage for Omnipod in Prince Edward Island
Public funding status
Prince Edward Island provides public funding for insulin pumps and pump supplies through the PEI Insulin Pump Program. The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System are covered under the PEI Insulin Pump Program.
Who may be eligible
You may be eligible for insulin pump coverage in Prince Edward Island if you:
- Are a PEI resident with a valid PEI Health Card
- Have type 1 diabetes
- Have filed your most recent income tax return in PEI
- Meet the program’s medical eligibility criteria, as assessed by the Provincial Diabetes Program or an approved diabetes care team
- Are able to safely manage insulin pump therapy and commit to required education and follow-up
Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for insulin pump coverage under this program.
What the program covers
If approved, the PEI Insulin Pump Program generally covers:
- One approved insulin pump every five years (or Starter Kit for Omnipod)
- Annual pump supplies, including Pods
- Coverage applies only to uninsured costs, after private insurance (if applicable) is applied
- Devices and supplies must be obtained from government-approved vendors
What coverage may look like (example)
With provincial support in PEI, eligible patients can expect 60–100% of the Omnipod system and Pod supplies to be covered. The amount covered depends on household income and insurance status, with the program covering part or all of the remaining eligible costs after private insurance and required co-payments are applied.
How access typically works
1. You complete the “Are You Ready to Pump?” self-assessment
2. You discuss insulin pump therapy with your diabetes care team
3. They complete the medical eligibility assessment through the Provincial Diabetes Program (or approved pathway if followed out of province)
4. You submit your program application, including income and insurance information
5. Once approved, you receive confirmation of coverage and can proceed with ordering your insulin pump and arranging training and first start
How long the process may take
Timelines can vary based on specialist availability, completion of medical assessments, and program demand. As the program expands, some patients may experience delays before starting insulin pump therapy.
If additional support is needed
Because coverage is income-based, a co-payment may apply. Co-payments are paid directly to the vendor. If your financial situation or insurance coverage changes, you can request a reassessment through the PEI Insulin Pump Program. You may also wish to review private insurance options to help with remaining costs.
