Coverage for Omnipod in Nova Scotia
Public funding status
Nova Scotia provides public funding for insulin pumps and pump supplies through the Nova Scotia Insulin Pump Program (NSIPP). The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System are covered under NSIPP.
Who may be eligible
You may be eligible for insulin pump coverage in Nova Scotia if you:
- Are a resident of Nova Scotia with a valid Nova Scotia Health Card
- Have type 1 diabetes
- Meet the program’s clinical eligibility criteria, confirmed by a diabetes care team
- Complete the Insulin Pump Therapy Participant Responsibility Agreement
Children and youth under 18 years of age are also eligible and follow a similar application process through a parent or legal guardian.
Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for insulin pump coverage under NSIPP.
What the program covers
If approved, the Nova Scotia Insulin Pump Program generally covers:
- One insulin pump every five years (or Starter Kit for Omnipod)
- Insulin pump supplies, such as Pods, adhesives and skin preparation
Coverage applies after any available private insurance has been used.
What coverage may look like (example)
With provincial support in Nova Scotia, eligible patients can expect the insulin pump and pump supplies, including Pods, to be covered through NSIPP. Coverage is income-based, with an annual copayment based on family size and household income, and NSIPP covering remaining eligible costs after insurance and copayment are applied.
How access typically works
1. You discuss insulin pump therapy with your diabetes care team
2. You submit the NSIPP application, including household income information and insurance details
3. Receive a letter confirming your annual copayment and return the signed Financial Agreement
4. Work with your diabetes care team to complete the Clinical Eligibility Form
5. Once approved, NSIPP coordinates access to your insulin pump and supplies through Insulet
How long the process may take
Once all required financial and clinical documents are received, approval typically takes 1–2 weeks, though timelines may be longer if additional information is needed.
If additional support is needed
If you have private insurance, you are required to use it first. If costs remain after insurance and copayment, NSIPP covers the remaining eligible amount. If your financial situation changes, you can request a reassessment through the program.
