Public funding status

Newfoundland and Labrador provides public funding for insulin pumps and pump supplies through the Newfoundland and Labrador Insulin Pump Program (NLIPP). The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System are covered under NLIPP.

Who may be eligible

You may be eligible for insulin pump coverage in Newfoundland and Labrador if you:

  • Are a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Have a valid NL Medical Care Plan (MCP) card
  • Have type 1 diabetes
  • Meet the program’s medical eligibility criteria, as certified by your healthcare provider
  • If you are 18 years of age or older and meet the program’s financial eligibility requirements through income testing

Children and youth under 18 years of age are universally covered when medical eligibility is met.

Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for insulin pump coverage under NLIPP.

What the program covers

If approved, the Newfoundland and Labrador Insulin Pump Program generally covers:

  • One insulin pump every five years (or Starter Kit for Omnipod)
  • Insulin pump supplies, including Pods
  • Coverage applies after all other financially obligated programs (such as private insurance) have paid, as NLIPP is the payer of last resort

What coverage may look like (example)

With provincial support in Newfoundland and Labrador, eligible patients can generally expect the insulin pump and pump supplies, including Pods, to be covered. For adults, coverage may involve income testing and a monthly co-payment, with NLIPP covering remaining eligible costs after private insurance and required contributions are applied.

How access typically works

1. You discuss insulin pump therapy with your healthcare provider or diabetes care team
2. Your provider completes the NLIPP Verification of Medical Eligibility Form
3. You complete the NLIPP Application Form, including insurance information
4. You submit both forms to NLIPP for review
5. If you are over 18, NLIPP completes a financial assessment through income testing
6. Once approved, NLIPP confirms coverage and coordinates access to the insulin pump and supplies through Insulet

How long the process may take

Timelines can vary depending on completion of medical forms and income testing, if required. Applications must be complete and legible to be processed, and approvals are issued once eligibility has been confirmed.

If additional support is needed

Because NLIPP is the payer of last resort, you may be asked to use private insurance first and contribute a monthly co-payment if applicable. If your financial situation changes, you can request a review through the NLIPP team.
