Public funding status

New Brunswick provides public funding for insulin pumps and pump supplies through the New Brunswick Insulin Pump Program (NBIPP). The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System are covered under NBIPP.

Who may be eligible

You may be eligible for insulin pump coverage in New Brunswick if you:

  • Have a valid New Brunswick Medicare number
  • Have type 1 diabetes
  • Are medically eligible for insulin pump therapy, as confirmed by your diabetes care provider
  • Are followed regularly by a diabetes care team and complete required education and orientation
  • Do not have 100% coverage through private insurance

What the program covers

If approved, the New Brunswick Insulin Pump Program generally covers:

  • An approved insulin pump (or Starter Kit for Omnipod)
  • Annual pump supplies, including Pods
  • Coverage applies only to uninsured costs, with the covered portion based on household income, household size, and private insurance status
  • Devices and supplies must be obtained directly from approved vendors (not community pharmacies)

What coverage may look like (example)

With provincial support in New Brunswick, eligible patients can expect a portion of the Omnipod system and Pod supplies to be covered through NBIPP, with the remaining amount paid directly to the vendor, based on household income and insurance coverage.

How access typically works

1. You discuss insulin pump therapy with your diabetes care provider
2. Your provider completes and submits the Confirmation of Medical Eligibility form to NBIPP
3. You complete the online client application, including household income and insurance details
4. Once all documents are reviewed and approved, NBIPP notifies you by letter
5. A member of the Omnipod team contacts you directly to arrange shipment of your Omnipod system and supplies

How long the process may take

Once all required medical and financial documents are received, application review typically takes up to 30 days, though it may take longer if information is missing or incomplete.

If additional support is needed

Because NBIPP coverage is income-tested, some costs may still apply. You may wish to review private insurance options, if available.
