Public funding status

British Columbia provides public coverage for insulin pumps and insulin pump supplies through BC PharmaCare. The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System is covered under BC PharmaCare.

Who may be eligible

You may be eligible for The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System coverage in British Columbia if you:

  • Are enrolled in a BC PharmaCare plan (such as Fair PharmaCare, Plan C, Plan F, or Plan W)
  • Have type 1 diabetes or another form of diabetes requiring insulin
  • Are under the care of an endocrinologist or diabetes specialist
  • Meet the medical criteria for insulin pump therapy, as confirmed through Special Authority approval

What the program covers

If approved, BC PharmaCare generally covers:

  • Omnipod’s Personal Diabetes Manager or Controller every 5 years
  • Pod supplies are 70% covered after your individual deductible is met and 100% after your family maximum is met

What coverage may look like (example)

Eligible patients can expect to have the Omnipod 5 or Omnipod DASH Starter Kit and Pod supplies covered according to their PharmaCare plan. Depending on the plan, deductibles or co-payments may apply.

How access typically works

1. You discuss insulin pump therapy, including Omnipod, with your endocrinologist or diabetes specialist
2. If you meet the medical criteria, your specialist submits a Special Authority request to PharmaCare
3. Once approved, PharmaCare sends an approval letter to your specialist, who provides you with a copy
4. After approval, you can proceed with ordering your Omnipod system and Pod supplies and arrange training and first start

Coverage is provided through pharmacies and approved pump manufacturers that submit claims directly to PharmaCare.

How long the process may take

Timelines can vary depending on how quickly the Special Authority request is submitted and reviewed. Approval is provided once PharmaCare has reviewed and confirmed eligibility.

If additional support is needed

Deductibles or co-payments may apply depending on your PharmaCare plan. You may wish to review private insurance options, if available.
