Private coverage

Private insurance coverage varies by individual plan design. Coverage is determined by the plan chosen by your employer, which could include co-pays, limits, and annual or lifetime maximums.

You can confirm your coverage with your insurer directly through their contact centre or member portal either on desktop or mobile app. You can also talk to your HR department to supply you with a benefits booklet.

Check your private insurance coverage for an insulin pump

Every private insurance plan is different, but checking whether your plan covers an Omnipod system usually follows similar, simple steps. Use the guide below to understand your benefits and learn what to do next.

1. Log in to your online insurance member portal where you can view your benefits.

2. Go to the “coverage” or “benefits” section and look for any of the following sections:

  • Coverage
  • Benefits
  • Coverage & Balances
  • Plan Details
  • Insurance Booklet

This is where insurers list what’s included in your plan.

3. Search for insulin pump coverage using the search bar or browse under categories like:

  • Medical Equipment / Durable Medical Equipment
  • Medical Devices or Medical Appliances
  • Extended Health Care
  • Diabetic Supplies
  • Other Medical Items

Look specifically for:

  • Insulin Pump
  • Insulin Pump Supplies

4. Review your coverage details where your plan may outline:

  • Whether insulin pumps are covered
  • Coverage amount or yearly maximum
  • Replacement cycle (e.g., every few years)
  • Requirements such as a medical note or pre‑approval
  • Whether you need to submit an estimate first

Insurers should include these details in their online coverage pages or benefits booklet.

5. If needed, submit an estimate (or pre‑determination). Some plans require prior approval before purchasing an insulin pump.

Common steps include:

  • Go to Submit a Claim, Submit an Estimate, or Pre‑authorization.

Choose the claim type:

  • Medical Equipment, Medical Supplies, or Other Medical Expenses

Upload the required documents:

  • Your Omnipod cost estimate
  • A Statement of Medical Necessity, if needed

6. Can’t find your coverage?

If you don’t see insulin pump details online:

  • Check your Benefits Booklet in the portal’s “Documents” or “Resources” area
  • Ask your employer for the booklet, as some insurers send it to plan administrators
  • Call your insurer using the phone number on your card

Many insurers rely on employer‑provided booklets for full coverage details.
