Coverage for Omnipod in Ontario
Public funding status
Ontario provides public funding for insulin pumps and pump supplies through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP). The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System are covered under ADP.
Who may be eligible
You may be eligible for public insulin pump coverage in Ontario if you:
- Are an Ontario resident with a valid Ontario health card
- Have type 1 diabetes
- Meet ADP’s medical eligibility criteria, as assessed by an ADP-registered Diabetes Education Program
- Must have been on injection therapy for 1 year prior to the initiation of insulin pump therapy
- Are followed by a diabetes care team and complete required education and follow-up
Eligibility is not income-based, but those receiving support from Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) or Veterans Affairs Canada for insulin pumps and supplies are not eligible for support from ADP.
Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for insulin pump coverage under ADP.
What the program covers
If approved, the Assistive Devices Program generally covers:
- 100% of the ADP-approved price of one insulin pump (or Starter Kit for Omnipod), typically replaced every five years, paid directly to the vendor
- Annual funding for insulin pump supplies up to a maximum of $2,400 annually, paid quarterly ($600)
- Coverage applies only to devices and supplies obtained through ADP-registered vendors
What coverage may look like (example)
With provincial coverage in Ontario, eligible patients can generally expect the Starter Kit to be fully covered through ADP, along with a portion of Pod supplies each year.
How access typically works
1. You discuss insulin pump therapy, including Omnipod, with your diabetes care team
2. Be assessed by an ADP-registered Diabetes Education Program (DEP) to confirm medical eligibility
3. If you are a suitable candidate, you complete a mandatory 90-day insulin pump trial, supported by your diabetes care team
4. At the start of the trial, the DEP helps complete and submit the ADP application and select an ADP preapproved vendor, like Insulet
5. Once the application is approved, Insulet provides you the Omnipod Starter Kit and you receive the first quarterly supply grant payment
6. If the trial is successful, you continue with insulin pump therapy and receive quarterly supply funding
How long the process may take
ADP aims to review applications within 8 weeks of receiving a complete submission. Timelines may vary depending on completion of assessments and documentation.
If additional support is needed
ADP funding for pump supplies is capped annually. You may wish to review private insurance options, if available, to help with remaining costs.
