Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB)
Public funding status
The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program provides coverage for insulin pumps and pump supplies for eligible members of First Nations and Inuit communities across Canada. The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System are covered under NIHB.
Who may be eligible
You may be eligible for insulin pump coverage through NIHB if you:
- Have type 1 diabetes
- Are under the care of an endocrinologist or specialist prescriber experienced in insulin pump therapy
What NIHB covers
NIHB is always the payor of last resort. All other forms of funding (i.e., provincial, private) must be used first before applying for NIHB coverage.
If approved, NIHB generally covers:
- One insulin pump every five years (or Starter Kit for Omnipod)
- Annual insulin pump supplies, including Pods
Pump supplies are covered once an insulin pump has been approved by NIHB, or if the pump was
partially or fully covered by another insurance plan.
How access typically works
- You discuss insulin pump therapy with your diabetes specialist
- Your prescriber submits a prior approval request to NIHB
- Once approved, NIHB coverage applies to the insulin pump and eligible pump supplies
