Public funding status

Manitoba provides public coverage for insulin pump hardware through the Manitoba Adult Insulin Pump Coverage Program (MAIPCP) for eligible adults, and through the Manitoba Pediatric Insulin Pump Program (MPIP) for eligible pediatric patients. The Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System is covered under MAIPCP and MPIP while supplies (Pods) are covered under Manitoba Pharmacare, subject to deductible.

Who may be eligible

You may be eligible for public insulin pump coverage in Manitoba if you:

  • Are a Manitoba resident with an active Manitoba Health Registration number
  • Have type 1 diabetes
  • Are recommended for insulin pump therapy by an endocrinologist or physician providing diabetes care
  • Are able to safely use an insulin pump
  • Have not received a provincially funded insulin pump within the past five years
  • Do not have coverage under a federal program

Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for public insulin pump coverage under this program.

What the program covers

If approved, the program generally covers:

  • One approved insulin pump (or Starter Kit for Omnipod) every five years, ordered directly from an approved supplier
  • There is no deductible required to receive the insulin pump
  • Pods are covered by Manitoba Pharmacare, subject to deductible

What coverage may look like (example)

With provincial coverage in Manitoba, eligible patients can generally expect the insulin pump to be fully covered, while supplies may be covered separately through Manitoba Pharmacare, depending on eligibility.

How access typically works

1. You discuss insulin pump therapy with your endocrinologist or physician
2. If pump therapy is appropriate, your physician submits an application to the MAIPCP or MPIP program on your behalf
3. If approved, you receive a letter with instructions on how to order an approved insulin pump at no cost
4. You can then arrange training and first start

How long the process may take

Timelines can vary depending on physician submission and application review. Approval is provided once eligibility has been confirmed by the program.

If additional support is needed

Because pump supplies (Pods) are subject to deductible through Manitoba Pharmacare, you may wish to review private insurance options, if available.
