Who may be eligible

You may be eligible for Omnipod coverage in Alberta if you:

  • Are an Alberta resident with provincial health coverage
  • Have type 1 diabetes or type 3c diabetes
  • Are under the care of a physician or nurse practitioner
  • Are assessed and approved by an Alberta Health Services (AHS) insulin pump clinic
  • Complete required education, assessments, and ongoing follow-up

Type 2 diabetes is not eligible for public insulin pump coverage under this program.

What the program covers

If approved, the Alberta Insulin Pump Therapy Program generally covers:

  • One insulin pump (or Starter Kit for Omnipod) every five years
  • Annual Pod supplies to support continued use

What coverage may look like (example)

With provincial coverage in Alberta, eligible patients can generally expect the Starter Kit and Pod supplies to be fully covered.

How access typically works

1. You discuss insulin pump therapy, including Omnipod, with your diabetes care team
2. You attend a pre-pump information session and assessment at an AHS insulin pump clinic
3. If you meet program and clinical criteria, the clinic submits the required forms on your behalf

Once approved, you can proceed with ordering your Starter Kit and Pod supplies and scheduling training and first start.

Coverage through the Alberta IPTP is provided on a direct bill basis to approved manufacturers and pharmacies.

How long the process may take

Timelines can vary depending on clinic availability and completion of required education and assessments. Approval is provided once all program requirements have been met and reviewed.

If additional support is needed

Some diabetes-related supplies may not be included in provincial coverage. You may wish to review private insurance options, if available.
