Omnipod® 5 FAQs: Availability and Access

At Insulet our mission is to improve the lives of people living with diabetes1.  As you may be aware, Omnipod 5 is now available to connect to the Dexcom G7 Sensor in addition to the Dexcom G6 and the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensor. We recently wrote to all Omnipod 5 users across the UK to share this great news. We are nonetheless aware that there are currently funding challenges particularly in England for Omnipod 5 with Dexcom G7, which we hope will be resolved soon. In the meantime, our teams are standing by to help both users and health care professionals who are faced with any challenges.
 
The launch of Omnipod 5 with Dexcom G7 is yet another step forward in our Sensor integration programme for the UK and Netherlands to offer increasing choice to the type 1 diabetes community. While we recognise that not all Sensors are accessible to everyone in all five of those countries immediately, we believe it’s important you know that we’re ready when you are.

Please note that if you are using Omnipod 5 with either the Dexcom G6 or FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensors, and intend to continue doing so, your Controller will still get the software update, but this will have no impact on you or the Omnipod 5 System you are using. 

Omnipod® 5 is included on the NHS Procurement Frameworks for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  Please check with your clinical team with regards to availability as Insulet works to ensure full local access across the country. The choice to go on to Omnipod 5 will depend on a number of factors, from access to the product in your locality, to clinical suitability for the product. Available options should be discussed between the individual, their parent or caregiver where appropriate, and their HCP at the next planned consultation.

We are aware that four-year warranties on insulin pumps are typically viewed as “lock-in” periods and a potential barrier to patient choice. That’s why we strive to take steps to facilitate flexibility and reduce ‘lock-in’ periods on Insulet’s Pod Therapy technology. The actuals steps we take may vary by location, so our Omnipod Specialist Team are here to provide an overview of how we do this.¹
