Omnipod® 5 Frequently Asked Questions

The Omnipod® 5 System is the only tubeless automated insulin delivery system integrated with Dexcom G6 CGM to manage blood glucose with no multiple daily injections, zero fingersticks and is fully controlled by a compatible personal smartphone. Omnipod® 5 consists of the tubeless and waterproof* Omnipod® 5 Pod, the Omnipod® 5 App with SmartBolus calculator and Dexcom G6 CGM.  The Pod is enhanced with SmartAdjust™ technology to continuously adjust insulin using a customizable glucose target. The App can be downloaded to a compatible smartphone or in the dedicated Controller, provided at no additional cost with your first prescription.

The Omnipod® 5 System is compatible with the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitor. The Dexcom G6 App is required to control the Dexcom G6 CGM.

The Omnipod® 5 System is intended for the management of type 1 diabetes mellitius in persons 6 years of age and older.

The upgrade will require a hardware change. A software upgrade is not available for the current Omnipod® Insulin Mangement System or Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management Systems. The Omnipod® 5 System uses a new controller and Pods to enable automated insulin delivery. To upgrade, you will need to get the new Omnipod 5 Pods and free controller as part of the first prescription. Omnipod® 5 requires a new prescription. Existing Omnipod® System or Omnipod DASH® Pods are not compatible with the new Omnipod® 5 controller.

The Omnipod® System and Omnipod DASH® Pods/PDM are not compatible with the new Omnipod® 5 System. The new Omnipod® 5 Pod includes an algorithm for automated insulin delivery and the controller software is specific to the new Pod. In general, the Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System uses its own Controller and Pods.

The Omnipod® System and Omnipod DASH® Pods are not compatible with the new Omnipod® 5 System. The new Omnipod® 5 Pod is powered by an algorithm for automated insulin delivery and the controller software is specific to the new Pod.

To make sure you are using the right Pod for your System, please refer to the labeling on the individual Pod tray lid.

Omnipod® 5 is a hybrid closed-loop, artificial pancreas system, which automatically adjusts basal insulin with the user manually delivering bolus insulin to cover meals.

Automated mode uses the CGM value and trend to make an insulin dose adjustment every 5 minutes using a customized glucose target. In Manual Mode, the System delivers insulin using a programmed basal rate. With the Omnipod® 5 System the user has the choice of whether they want to use Automated Mode or Manual Mode.

The Omnipod® 5 System is the only tubeless automated insulin delivery system integrated with Dexcom G6 CGM to continuously adapt and deliver insulin to your personal needs. The Omnipod DASH® System is not integrated with the Dexcom G6 CGM and is not capable of automated insulin delivery, but rather delivers insulin based on the user's programmed basal rates for manual delivery.

The Omnipod® 5 System will be available at launch in the US in English only. Insulet is working on the development of other languages in future releases of the product and has no information at this time we can share.

Yes. The Omnipod® 5 Pod will provide automated insulin delivery for up to 72 hours.

Yes, the Omnipod® 5 Pod is the same size as previous Omnipod® and Omnipod DASH® Pods

Omnipod® 5 is compatible with Glooko®. Data is uploaded from the Omnipod® 5 Controller or Omnipod® 5 App wirelessly using the built-in SIM card for cellular connectivity or from a secure Wi-Fi connection if established.

Insulet offers a black Omnipod® 5 Gel Skin ($15), Charging Cable ($5), and Charging Adaptor ($5) that users can order through the customer service re-order department. SugarMedical offers additional accessories: PodPals (10-ct) and additional colored Gel Skins at https://sugarmedical.com/.

The Omnipod® 5 Controller is a customized dedicated device. There is not a customized screen protector that fits the model and we have not validated any off-the-shelf screen protectors.

The Omnipod® 5 Pod is enhanced with a control algorithm called SmartAdjust™ technology. Every 5 minutes, SmartAdjust™ technology receives CGM data and it takes this information and predicts where glucose will be 60 minutes into the future. It then increases, decreases, or pauses automated insulin using the user's customized target.

Target Glucose is the only adjustable setting that directly impacts automated insulin delivery. Bolus Calculator settings are adjustable and impact suggested bolus doses in Automated and Manual Modes.

The Omnipod® 5 System uniquely adapts to the user's insulin needs with every Pod change.

No. The Omnipod® 5 System does not have the ability to fine tune basal dosing in increments less than 0.05 units per hour.

No. Omnipod® 5 is the only Automated Insulin Delivery System in the U.S. a with customized Target Glucose value of 110 mg/dL.

The SmartAdjust™ Technology is able to respond to high glucose levels by increasing insulin every 5 minutes to bring glucose down to target. Omnipod® 5 delivers a microbolus of insulin every 5 minutes to correct blood glucose using the user's customized glucose target of 110-150mg/dL.

The Omnipod® 5 System is cleared for use for people with type 1 diabetes aged 6 years and older using the same system and algorithm.

Automated insulin delivery in the first Pod is initiated based on user-selected basal rate profiles and then adapts over time by tracking insulin delivered by the system. With each new Pod activation, the system adapts insulin delivery based on physiological needs and total daily insulin (TDI) delivered. After 2-3 Pod changes, adaptation generally stabilizes and automated insulin delivery is based on this adaptation.

The SmartAdjust™ technology is a model predictive control algorithm that communicates with the Dexcom G6 CGM every 5 minutes and predicts where glucose will be in 60 minutes and increases, decreases or pauses insulin using a customized glucose target set by the user. The MiniMed 670G is a proportional-integral-derivative algorithm that takes CGM values from the Medtronic sensor and every 5 minutes adjusts insulin to a set Target glucose of 120mg/dL. The Tandem Control:IQ system is also a model predictive control algorithm that communicates with the Dexcom G6 CGM and every 5 minutes predicts where glucose will be in 30 minutes and increases, decreases or pauses insulin to a target range rather than a customized glucose target.

You can adjust your Target Glucose which will impact your bolus calculations if you include a glucose value. The Target Glucose will not impact the basal insulin delivery during Automated Mode: Limited. You can also activate the Activity feature which may reduce basal delivery during Automated Mode: Limited. 

No, the algorithm adjusts with each new Pod activation based on physiological needs and total daily insulin (TDI) delivered.

Yes, it is still important to bolus before meals that contain carbohydrates. You should also bolus to correct high glucose levels. Follow the advice of your healthcare provider regarding bolus dosing and timing. 

The Omnipod® 5 App is available for download on compatible smartphones and may be used to control the Omnipod® 5 System. The Omnipod® 5 App is only compatible with certain mobile devices and operating systems. Please check our compatibility guide for more information about device compatibility before using the app. We will continue to expand this list and encourage you to visit often.

When a new phone model becomes compatible with the Omnipod® 5 System, we will update the compatibility list which can be found at www.omnipod.com/compatibility. 

At this time, the Omnipod VIEW® App is not compatible with Omnipod® 5. We are working diligently to launch it soon on both Android and iOS.

The Omnipod DISPLAY® App is compatible with the Omnipod DASH® System enabling the user to view their system status on their personal phone. The Omnipod DISPLAY® App is not compatible with Omnipod® 5.

Currently, the Omnipod® 5 System is only compatible with select Android mobile devices and operating systems. iOS compatibility is under development and there is no additional information to share at this time. Users are encouraged to visit www.omnipod.com/compatibility for smartphone model compatibility updates.

You will only be able to use either the provided Controller or your compatible personal smartphone at a single time to control the Omnipod® 5 System. If you decide later to use a different smartphone or revert back to the Controller, you will need to start setup again on the new device. If you are wearing a Pod and need to switch , you will need to deactivate your Pod and activate a new one.

The Omnipod® 5 App has been designed to ensure safe and secure communication with the Pod. The app ensures that you must first login to start using the app. The app is verified through Insulet's cloud using the industry standard certificate. Every communication between the Pod and Omnipod® 5 App is encrypted and goes through a series of verifications to ensure that only the trusted Omnipod® 5 App can communicate with the Pod. As a result, all aspects of the communication between the app, Pod, and the cloud are protected from security threats.

Smartphone compatibility is defined at two levels: the phone model and the operating system. In order to use your personal smartphone to control the Omnipod® 5 System, you’ll need to have both a compatible phone model and operating system that is on our compatibility list. Our compatibility list can be found at Omnipod.com/compatibility.

No, the Omnipod® 5 System does not have integration with a blood glucose meter. The Omnipod® 5 System integrates with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor.

The Omnipod® 5 System is not integrated with the Ascensia blood glucose meter. You are however able to use any meter to manually check your blood glucose and manually enter the reading in the Omnipod® 5 System. A blood glucose meter is not included with the Omnipod® 5 System.

The Dexcom G6 CGM is the only CGM that communicates with the Omnipod® 5 System. Blood glucose meters do not communicate with the Omnipod® 5 System. You are however able to use any meter to manually check your blood glucose and manually enter the reading in the Omnipod® 5 System. A blood glucose meter is not included with the Omnipod® 5 System.

The Omnipod® 5 System is compatible with the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitor. However, the Dexcom G6 receiver cannot be used, users must use the Dexcom mobile app as part of the Omnipod® 5 System.

The Omnipod® 5 System can be used with or without a CGM but to benefit from automated insulin delivery, it must be paired with the Dexcom G6 CGM. Please discuss with your healthcare provider to determine which product is right for you and get a prescription for the Omnipod® 5 System.

The Dexcom G6 is Dexcom’s latest generation continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system and is approved for patients ages 2 years and older. Unlike previous generations, this CGM system is factory-calibrated — so no fingersticks are required!* The system is comprised of a sensor, transmitter, and display device. The sensor is inserted just below the skin with a redesigned, one-touch auto applicator and houses a sleek, discreet transmitter. The transmitter sends glucose readings as frequently as every 5 minutes to a receiver or compatible smart device.

iOS and Android users can make use of the Dexcom G6 app, which displays the current glucose reading, where glucose is heading, and how fast on a compatible smart device.

No, Omnipod® 5 is available for all customers with insurance coverage and a prescription.

No, with our OmnipodPromiseTM you can upgrade to Omnipod® 5 at any time with no contract, obligation or commitment, when covered by your insurance provider. The Omnipod® 5 Controller also comes FREE with your first prescription. Therefore, if you start on Omnipod® DASH today, you can still upgrade to Omnipod® 5 once you have insurance coverage and a prescription from your doctor.

At this time, existing Omnipod® Insulin Management System is not being discontinued.

At this time the Omnipod® 5 System is only available in the United States. We are currently working on making the Omnipod® 5 System available in additional markets, but no further information is available at this time. The Omnipod® Insulin Management System and Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System continue to be available in Europe and Canada.

Yes. The Omnipod® 5 System is available through the pharmacy channel.

Omnipod® 5 is available from specific pharmacies, as long as you have coverage.  As we build distribution, your prescription may temporarily need to be filled by mail order or a speciality pharmacy instead of your local retail pharmacy.
