Blog: Metatags for Social Sharing

Tags to Add – Open Graph

Add the below tags in the “Open Graph” section of the Metatags tab on the right side of the Edit tab for each blog post. Underlined content = enter tag exactly as written.

NOTE: These tags are used by Facebook and LinkedIn. For Twitter see the next section for “Twitter Cards” metatags.

  • Site name = Omnipod
  • Content type = article
  • Page URL = full URL with https
  • Title = blog title
    • Best practices
      • Focus on accuracy, value, and clickability.
      • Keep it short to prevent overflow. There’s no official guidance on this, but 40 characters for mobile and 60 for desktop is roughly the sweet spot.
      • Use the raw title. Don’t include branding (e.g., your site name).
  • Description = short description of blog topic
    • Best practices
      • Complement the title to make the snippet as appealing and click-worthy as possible.
      • Copy your meta description here if it makes sense.
      • Keep it short and sweet. Facebook recommends 2–4 sentences, but that often truncates.
  • Image = full URL with https of blog hero image (or whatever image you want featured on social shares)
    • Best practices
      • Use images with a 1.91:1 ratio and minimum recommended dimensions of 1200x630 for optimal clarity across all devices.
  • ONLY used by non-US English content:
    • Locale = the language_country code from the URL, i.e. en_gb
      • Use only for content not written in American English (en_us). Facebook assumes content without this tag is written in this language.
  • Optional tags:
    • Article author = used by LinkedIn

Tags to Add – Twitter Cards

Add the below tags in the “Twitter Cards” section of the Metatags tab on the right side of the Edit tab for each blog post. These tags are used Twitter only.

  • Twitter card type = select Summary Card with large image
  • Description = short description of blog topic
    • Best practices
      • A description that concisely summarizes the content of the page, as appropriate for presentation within a Tweet. Do not re-use the title text as the description, or use this field to describe the general services provided by the website. The string will be truncated, by Twitter, at the word to 200 characters.
  • Title = blog title
    • Best practices
      • The page's title, which should be concise; it will be truncated at 70 characters by Twitter.
      • Use the raw title. Don’t include branding (e.g., your site name).
  • Page URL = full URL with https
  • Image URL = full URL with https of blog hero image (or whatever image you want featured on social shares)
    • Best practices
      • The URL to a unique image representing the content of the page. Do not use a generic image such as your website logo, author photo, or other image that spans multiple pages. Images larger than 120x120px will be resized and cropped square based on longest dimension. Images smaller than 60x60px will not be shown.
  • Optional tags:
    • Site’s Twitter account = the @username for the website, which will be displayed in the Card's footer; must include the @ symbol
      • US account: @myomnipod
